Sanborn Elementary School
This semester I was placed in a Kindergarten class at Sanborn Elementary.
Spring2013:EDU 291
Sanborn Elementary School
Grade:K
Hours:20
During my service learning I’ve completed 20 hours at Sanborn.
I was involved with the students. I went to lunch and lunch recess with the students on the first day to get to know them better. I also went to specials with the students. When I walk into the class at 10:00 the
students are doing reading/writing centers. While the students are in their
centers I sit with one group at a time and help them if the need help. Some of the centers the students work on site words, writing short stories, and reading books. Sometimes I will have the students read their books to me or I will read a few short books to them. While at the library with the class, I talked to the students about what kind of books they liked and some of the student read their books to me. I was alo able to create and teach two of my very own lesson plans to the students. The first lesson plan was a letter to their teacher and the second lesson plan invloved the students making their own puppet monsters.

My nerves were sky high, the children were eager to meet me and all I could do was stand there shy. For the first time I was nervous to meet the students in my service learning class. After being in the class a few times my nerves were gone and I was ready to interact a lot more with the students.
This semester I was placed in a second grade classroom at CAT-Freedom Elementary, and had a blast. The students were nice and my mentor teacher was amazing. She game me worksheets that I could use in my future classroom and plently of feedback when I presented two lesson plans to her students.

While in service learning this semester I was able to make two of my very own lesson plans and teach them to the students. The first lesson plan I made was on science and the Human Body. The students were learning about the digestive system and I choose the most perfect book to go along with it. The Magic School Bus Inside the Human Body Written by Joanna Cole and Illustrated by Bruce Degen was a wonderful choice for the students. It kepty the students interested and was all about the digestive system. I felt that my lesson plan went very well for being my first time and I got some feedback from my mentor teacher saying I did an excellent job. The only few things I had to change were making myself more clearn to the students when introducing the objective of the lesson and making a better conclusion.
For my reader response activity I had the students lable a picture of a body and I also gave them a handout of labledorgens inside the body. Once I was done presenting my mentor teacher went into her next science lesson which was the respitory system.
For my second lesson plan I read the book Goldie and the Three Bears written by Diane Stanley. For the second grade reading standard the students have to compare and contrast two of the same stories. For starters, the title is a little different, and instead of eating pourage, Goldie eats a sandwich. For my reader response activity I had the students fill in a Venn-Diagram to show the differences and similarities. Once the students were done with that, they had to turn their paper over and make up their own version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The students seemed to enjoy the second lesson plan much better and my mentor teacher said it went much better than my first lesson plan.

As I walk into class, M yelled out,
“Miss Reyna, K’s mom made trensas (braids) in my hair this morning!“ M is an Ell student in my service
learning class; her mom is always too busy working that she is too exhausted to do M’s hair. K’s mom came into class that morning just to fix M’s hair and she was so excited about it because she never had that type of attention before. This semester I was placed in a mainstream first grade room with two ELL students. I didn’t notice much about how my mentor teacher modified lessons or taught in a special way for the ELL students, and it was even hard to tell who the ELL students were. My mentor teacher modified lessons by making homework and in class assignments easier for the students to read by putting pictures on it. She also modeled lessons and activities for the students so they have a better and clearer understanding of what the teacher expects. I would help the ELL students a lot and I would talk to them in Spanish during free time. When it was reading group time I would work specifically with the ELL students and they would read books to me. Of course I learning not to discourage the child so if they were stuck on a word I would help them sound it out. This semester I had a blast at Mesquite Elementary School. It was hard to say goodbye to the students especially to M and A, the two ELLs in the class.

This
semester in my service learning I learned different ways to modify lessons. A few of the ways were·
Modeling
Showing examples
Making homework assignments shorter
Having pictures on the assignment with the specific word underlined or bold
Throughout the semester I was able to relate my notes to the lesson objectives. I was even able to go into the resource class with the 6 other ELL students from the first grade. While I was in the resource room I learned that it can be stressful when the students can barely speak English and it’s hard to keep them all focused. While I was doing an interview with the resource room teacher she told me “It’s amazing to see how much progress the students make throughout the year.” When she told me that, it made me realize that no matter how stressful teaching can be, the child’s progress and knowledge are the only things that matter and I made a difference in their life. That is the best lesson I got throughout my service learning experience.

My experience at Galveston was so much fun. The students were wonderful and full of joy. Every time I stepped into the classroom, they greeted me with “Ms. Reyna I missed you.” followed with a hug. I learned a lot about different teacher’s philosophies. When I was there, I had teachers do a survey I made about diversity. There wasn’t much diversity going on as there could be, but at least the students are learning about it. I go back every once in a while to visit the students because I’ll start to miss them. My experience was wonderful, and I am extremely thankful for having the opportunity to get to know these exciting students. in my class, there 16 students and 5 of those students have special needs and all 16 of them are English Language Learners.

Hartford Sylvia Encinas Elementary School; where the teachers are amazing and the mascot is a husky, this is where I do my service learning. I was taught many things and experienced things that could help me in my future. The students gave me memories that I'll never forget. My mentor teacher was very sweet, and she is someone I'll always have to get if I need anything. I grew up going to this school and I plan on teaching kindergarten here. Hartford Sylvia Encinas will be apart of me for the rest of my life.

At H.S.E.E. I had tons of fun experiences with the children. We went to the zoo and went to their specials. I got to see their daily routines. At the beginning the children were shy and didn't know how to react with a stranger in the class. The next time I went to visit the children were trying to get used to me being there. On my third day, the students welcomed me with open arm and yelled "Hi Ms. Reyna, we missed you." It made me very happy and the day I left my students broke my heart. I'll go back to visit them but my experience saying good-bye is one I'll never forget. Thursday December 9th, I went to my students holiday program. The students gave me a pair of comfy socks and I gave them all each a stocking filled with candies and a holiday pencil. They all loved it and before the program was about to begin, I read them the letter I wrote. It was the hardest good-bye and it made me cry. I promised the kids I'd be back to visit them and I look forward to it. I miss them already and all the experiences I had with them are memories I'll never forget. Here's one of the experiences I had with the child at the trip to the zoo and back to the classroom. My class and I went to the phoenix zoo on November 18th. It was so much fun and I had a great time helping my mentor teacher prepare for it. I was in charge of a group of 3girls and everywhere I turned a child was saying “Ms.Reyna look at the animal. What is it? ” I told my students what kind of animal it was and explained to them what it ate. When we got back to the classroom, we wrote sentences about what we saw and how they liked the field trip. I helped my students sound out “I had a lot of fun”, I also helped them sound out “I saw a monkey with a funny looking butt.” It was so cute because my students wrote funny with one “n” and instead of a y they used “e”. This was a great experience for me and the students.

"Teacher, my computer is broken, The sound doesn't work, Can you help me?" Those were some things I heard while working with the students in the "media center". The students were always eager to go to the computer lab and every chance they got, they loved to play with the different programs. During one experience, to the computer lab, the students learned how to use word; however, they were having problems. At one point, one of the students started crying because her group members didn’t want to listen to her. I went over to help them and at first they didn’t want my help. I had them apologize to the other child and told them to give her a fair chance. Once they got the program open they didn’t know what the next step was. I helped them chose a font to use and what color they wanted. Next they had to spell their name using the key board. I helped them find the letters by telling them what row the letters of their name was on.
